What Is an ATS Controller? A Technical Guide to Automatic Transfer Switch Controllers, ATS & Generator Power Transfer
At Gorlan India, we design and manufacture low voltage switchgear that forms the switching backbone of every reliable automatic power transfer system. This is a technical breakdown of how an ATS Controller works, the electrical parameters that determine system reliability, and why the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) or motorized changeover switch is just as important as the controller logic driving it.
What an ATS Controller Actually Does
An ATS Controller is an intelligent control device that continuously monitors the incoming utility (mains) power supply and automatically manages the transfer of electrical load to a standby generator whenever a power failure occurs. Once the utility supply is restored and remains stable within preset voltage and frequency limits, the controller transfers the load back to the utility source and shuts down the generator after a programmed cooling period.
An ATS panel is built around two functional layers:
- The ATS Controller — monitors voltage, frequency, and phase parameters, and issues generator start/stop and transfer commands.
- The switching mechanism — the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) or motorized changeover switch that physically executes the load transfer.
How an ATS Controller Works with an ATS
An ATS Controller and an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) work together to ensure uninterrupted power during a mains failure.
1. Monitors the Mains Supply
The ATS Controller continuously monitors voltage, frequency, and phase conditions.
2. Detects a Power Failure
If the mains supply fails or goes beyond the preset limits, the ATS Controller sends a start signal to the standby generator.
3. Transfers the Load
Once the generator reaches stable voltage and frequency, the ATS automatically transfers the electrical load from the mains to the generator.
4. Restores Normal Supply
When the mains power returns and stabilizes, the ATS Controller instructs the ATS to transfer the load back to the utility supply. The generator then completes its cooling cycle and shuts down automatically.

Where Gorlan India Fits In
While the ATS Controller continuously monitors the utility supply and determines when a transfer is required, the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) is the component that physically transfers the electrical load between the utility supply and the standby generator.
Gorlan India’s Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) is engineered to deliver safe, reliable, and seamless power transfer in critical applications. Once the ATS Controller detects a mains failure and the generator reaches stable voltage and frequency, the ATS automatically disconnects the utility source and connects the load to the generator. When the utility supply is restored and remains stable for the programmed time delay, the ATS transfers the load back to the mains and isolates the generator.
Gorlan India also manufactures the wider switching portfolio that ATS Controllers and ATS panels depend on, manufactured at our Coimbatore facility.
