How Switchgear Supports the Growth of Solar Power in India
India’s solar power sector is no longer a small part of the country’s energy transition. It is becoming one of the major pillars of new power generation.
According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), India’s cumulative installed solar capacity reached 168.04 GW as of 31 August 2026.
This includes 123.99 GW of ground-mounted solar, 32.59 GW of grid-connected rooftop solar, 4.83 GW of hybrid projects with a solar component, and 6.63 GW of off-grid solar.
The scale of this expansion creates an important engineering requirement: solar power systems need reliable electrical switching and isolation at every stage of the installation.
This is where switchgear becomes critical.
Solar Growth Is Also a Switchgear Challenge
A solar PV system may look simple from the outside: sunlight reaches the panels, the panels generate DC electricity, and an inverter converts it into AC power for use or grid connection. But electrically, there are several points where equipment must be switched, isolated, maintained and protected.
A typical solar installation can include:
Solar panels → PV strings → Combiner boxes → DC switch-disconnectors → Inverter →
AC switchgear → Transformer/Grid
A switch-disconnector may appear to be a small component compared with a solar panel or inverter, but its role is significant: it provides a means of isolating electrical circuits during installation, maintenance or emergency situations.
And DC switching has its own technical challenges.
Where Does a DC Switch-Disconnector Fit in a Solar
System?
A DC switch-disconnector can be used between the PV array and inverter to provide a means of manually isolating the DC side of the system.
This becomes particularly important during maintenance.
Imagine a technician needs to work on an inverter.
Even after the inverter has been stopped, the solar panels can continue producing DC voltage whenever sufficient sunlight is available.
The ability to isolate the DC circuit provides an important layer of operational safety and makes maintenance procedures more manageable.
Gorlan’s photovoltaic DC switch-disconnector range is designed specifically for applications such as PV installations, combiner boxes and string inverters, with products available across different voltage and current requirements.
From Rooftops to Utility-Scale Solar
India’s solar expansion is happening across different types of installations.
1. Rooftop Solar
Rooftop PV systems need compact and reliable DC isolation, especially where installation space is limited.
Gorlan’s F1 compact DC switch-disconnectors are designed for photovoltaic applications, with options up to 1500 V DC, 2P and 4P configurations, and IP66 enclosures for specified versions.
2. Multi-String PV Systems
As PV systems use multiple strings, dedicated multi-string switching helps simplify circuit isolation and control.
Gorlan’s F7 DC multi-string switch-disconnector supports 13–63 A and up to 1500 V DC, with 2P to 10P configurations for multi-string PV applications. It is designed according to IEC/EN 60947-3 and UL508i requirements stated by the manufacturer.
3. Larger Solar Installations
Utility-scale solar plants require higher-current DC switching solutions.
Gorlan’s S7 series offers solutions from 200 A to 400 A at 1500 V DC, while the S5 series extends up to 3150 A at 1500 V DC for specified applications.
The Bigger Picture
India’s solar capacity has grown from 2.82 GW at the end of March 2014 to 168.04 GW by 31 August 2026, according to MNRE’s cumulative figures.
As solar projects become larger, rooftop installations become more widespread, and PV systems operate at higher DC voltages, the importance of application-specific switchgear will continue to increase.
The future of solar power depends not only on how much energy we can generate, but also on how safely and reliably we can control, isolate and distribute it.
And that makes switchgear an essential part of the solar power ecosystem.
